    FL Studio *Did you know?*

I was on FL Studio yesterday going through the Mixer, within the program.

However I did notice something rather different. Unexpectedly.

So theres the Master Channel, followed by 99 slots for presets and instruments. Then there is Send 1 - 4. Just before the Effects Slots.

I then saw something I hadnt taken much notice of, which is a bar showing **Selected.**

Although I am having difficulty mastering, is it all down to that 'Selected Channel', where I need to put in some effects e.g limiter, compressor, maximizer, parametric or which ever effect needed?

Or is that just linked to the Master Level next to the File Bar top left in the DAW?

Could that be the answer to my mastering problem which is, for me the track sounds like it should, however it does not sound as it should at lower volume. (Lower volume sounds like its the only way I can explain its under water. Furthermore when it gets louder there is a sharpness to it, which Im sure for other listers would be put off by it. For which all of what Ive said is not evident in the top producers works such as Corsten and Co. When their tracks are played at lower volumes it sounds just like it would at higher volumes and it sounds soft to the ear.

Any advice would be gratefuly received, whether you think my issue is with this Selected Channel or somewhere else?

The 'Selected Channel' could be any of the 99 mixer slots.

Ok, so does that have any relevance to the output sound?

A tip for better mixing and mastering is to have your master channel completely empty (free of any limiters, compressors, EQs and everything else, really) until you are done with mixing and mastering of the individual tracks/channels. ALSO, keep the master channel volume at -6 dB (which should be 75%). That way it will be more silent, but given that you have a lot of individual tracks that are playing at louder volume, it will also prevent some clipping and distortion. It will be easier to mix and master that way, trust me.

The selected channel doesn't have any relevance to your mastering issues.

    OH Emm F Ing G,

Just by decreasing the Master Volume as suggested by @Gagi I am listening to my track and there is something dramatically different to the quality.

I dont know how to say Thank You and infinite amount of times, I knew coming to this Forum would be the making of Real Wilkinson!!!! [ben-wilkinson]

    -6db 75% of 140 BPM @ 4 over 4 kicks sounds lush!

Glad I could be of help. Often times I do that, sometimes I don't at the beginning, but almost always do it as my tracks start getting too loud and muddy - a result of a lot of elements. It's so much easier to mix then, gives more room to every element.

And to make sure your tracks sound awesome at low volume, produce at low volume - as simple as that - just decrease your system volume down as much as you'd like; though that's a bit boring.

Maybe you should do your own Schooling of DAWs.

I went to PBL Point Blank London before, however Mac Computers are a nightmare, I used Ableton when there and Ableton aint to bad a program. I like using FL Studio its a lot better for user friendlyness.

    How come you say that?

Yep, FL is my choice as well. Pretty easy and nice to use, although it has its shortcomings - I don't like how you have two to three additional clicks to make an automation - Ableton makes it as soon as you touch a knob.
And it'd be nice if everything from the channel rack was linked to the mixer automatically (and give the mixer channels and playlist tracks and clips the names/colours/icons automatically as well). That'd also spare you a few additional, annoying clicks that can kill your productivity and workflow. Although this (existing) way gives you more freedom, it makes it more messy too if you're not careful. I'm more tidy with my projects: one playlist track/clip, one mixer channel (and especially instruments, I always link them individually). If you have a couple of different claps together, you can just group them, and that's my next point.
Grouping is also what could be done better, because when you group playlist tracks, it's not really useful for anything other than aesthetics and it's easier to find what you want IMO. In Ableton, when you group something in the arrangement view, it's present in the mixer so you can, let's say, group all the drums and compress them at once, and in FL, you have to SEND the channels you want grouped to the empty mixer channel, which you can't see in the playlist. Hope you catch my drift.
All in all, Ableton is more connected when it comes to the mixer, the arrangement view, the channel rack and so on. In FL, it's more or less separated, and you have to link everything by yourself.

Well I know a few things but I'm hardly a pro. Although if someone is willing to pay...

@Gagi, Ive just listened to a Rendered Version of my track in the car, You've inadvertandly helped made the Audio Sound Not As Muddy in lower volumes and in higher volumes it sounds so much better, that sharpness before gone.

If I had to he honest you are like "Cilit Bang for Music, White Noise Gone!"

    Thank you @Gagi!!!

You never thought that red-lining is bad for audio quality and that you should fix it somehow?
