    Favourite Movie OST's

To continue the great thread made by Daysleeper regarding gaming OST's I thought it would be a fine idea to have a similar thread regarding movies and series'.

For some odd reason most people today don't seem to care about music in movies, it's all about the CGI, but one can easliy forget about the fantastic emotions and meaning behind a good score and how important it can be to the story. Sometimes the score is even more important than the characters in it and it can even be a whole character in itself. Because of that I think we should have a thread about your favorite movie scores / OST's. It can be both new and old it doesn't matter.

I'll start with one of my favorite movie OST's of all time by Philip Glass. He made the OST for a 1983 movie called Koyaanisqatsi - a movie about the destruction of our planet. It's actually a silent movie and can be thought of as a Planet Earth episode without the narration. If you're going to make a movie like that you have to make a vivid and important OST, which I think Glass accomplished.

Hmm, my favourite of all times I don't know, but a few that have recently left somewhat of an impression are the ones of The Revenant and Black Mass.

One I absolutely love, but it's just a collection of amazing tracks is the Layer Cake OST - I felt like it was the perfect choice for the movie.

And last but should be first is the very recent Distance Between Dreams OST by Junkie XL. The movie/documentary/whatever didn't use the OST to its full potential, but the soundtrack by itself is an album full of amazing tracks. You just can't pick a favourite, every track is absolutely awesome.

    ---

And I completely agree with you, people do not find it that relevant. I too overlooked music in movies, and I did that until very recently. This video especially blew (and opened) my mind, it still does.

    Great video, @Gagi!

One of my favorite sci-fi movies is Moon and it also has a fantastic soundtrack. Very subtle, but incredibly important for the movie! Some of the tracks are used again and again but with some small twists each time.

I havn't seen the movie but the music is well-made and throughout eerie, dramatic, vivid and twisted with some hints of serenity and hope. Probably suits the movie well. The Moon is pretty eerie aswell, which there's nothing wrong with, but, just for the sake of it I will post a bit more cuddly and dreamy piece from a movie called Diva. Its a ostinato for solo piano ala Erik Satie.

Everyone probably know this but it doesn't take away the fact that its a very touching and powerful melody.

Similiar touching arrangement including piano and strings. You just can't hold back and that lump in your throat is inevitable.

An ambient piece of very broading nature full of emotion, from a animated film called Tekkonkinkret.

And ofc from the best movie of all times. A time-stopping piece of electronica/ambient.

I wonder why people make fun of this one since it truly a good and original piece of music.

I wonder why movie theme from the 80s and 90s was so much more powerful. Name one from the last 10 years that is as memorable as this.!

One of my favourites, from a TV movie/documentary, Distance Between Dreams. Best part - from 3:36 onwards. Even better within the context of the whole OST album.

I like what Johann Johannsson is doing. A lot of people probably don't.

From more classical pieces, this one is brilliant.

I find myself often liking the OSTs of the series rather than movies, such as Broadchurch OST (1 and 2), composed by Olafur Arnalds. Every song is better than the last.

Talk about amazing OSTs... This is the best of them all. Behold, The Immigrant (Main Theme) of Godfather. And the best part kicks in at around 1:05. That melody... Bittersweet. I like the first part of the melody, it's very sad, but the 2nd one is more bittersweet.
