    When I wake up I grab my phone and read news and Facebook. Really having trouble getting out of bed... I guess the mind puts itself in "bored" mode, not wanting to do anything. Should just get up, get dressed and go downstairs...

    Exactly. I found that when I forgo reaching for my phone the first time in the morning, my mornings are quite more quiet and peaceful, the process of waking up and getting up isn't as hard and I enjoy it more. The phone just ruins it. I should just wait until I make my morning dose of green tea, then check whatever "needs" checking out.

    And I know all of this, but I always go for my phone... What can I do, it's just there.

    And usually, when I check out my Twitter, Instagram and various messaging apps first thing in the morning, I don't remember what the hell I just read or wrote.

    well gagi, the solution is simple: no phone near your bed. You obviously knew that already.

    Exactly. But that's where my charger is, I usually let it charge while I sleep. However when I go home on some weekends, I charge it on the desk which is few meters away. I'm actually going home today, which will give me 5 days to form a habit.

    I might give it a shot, but I don't expect results every single morning. I kinda like browsing social networks before bed.

    Plus, if I don't get my phone first thing in the morning, I run the risk of falling asleep. This kinda wakes me up and gets me ready to get up.

    Haha, not sure what you mean by that, not a Djokovic supporter.

    To be honest, I would've deleted my Facebook already (but kept Messenger) - it's become a relative-infested place. They keep sending me friend requests, then get angry like a child when I don't accept. Who needs to see a picture of me kissing a beer bottle that was taken 7 years ago (I was ~16)? Gonna strip it to the bare minimum, delete almost everything and use it for college. I'm in a group with my fellow colleagues and we share info there so I need it.

    Now that I think about it, I don't need social media, I just like Instagram. If I had to, I'd only keep messaging apps.

    Since Thursday last week, I kept my phone near me when I went to sleep, but when I woke up I didn't use it first thing in the morning. Only to check what time it is. Only when I got up, had my morning tea or just did nothing, did I check Twitter and Instagram, along with messaging apps.

    What happened may not shock you. Sometimes I just plain forget to even open them, only remembering to do so a good few hours after waking up. I don't even check Facebook anymore, and I've limited Twitter to just a few opens a day, seriously considering uninstalling it. I'll probably delete most of my stuff from Facebook, including pictures, posts, liked pages etc, only have it for practical purposes.

    What this little thing taught me is that we certainly don't need social networks as much as I thought. I like discovering new, interesting stuff on Facebook that some pages post, but it takes too much time to find them. With Twitter, I'm not really sure why I should read other people's opinions, even though they may seem funny.

    One thing I haven't noticed any improvement on are my mornings. It hasn't really made that much of a difference, maybe the process of waking up is a bit more 'gentle', but that's about it.

    Yeah.... I broke the rule since day 1.

    Hahahahaha, yeah I know, weakness... I'm proud of you though! I see the benefits aren't huge and directly there, although the long-term-benefits may be unclear for us at this point (I mean the whole brainwash-facebook-thing). I hope to find the strength to start this myself soon (lol).

    I already don't have twitter, nor instagram, nor snapchat. Also planning on deleting stuff from Facebook like you said.

    Well, the benefits are there... This thing, it has started a slow and steady detox from social media. Hope you do that too. It doesn't take strength, it's just a simple decision.

    Part of the reason I cycle into work now was to avoid seeing this crazy behaviour everyday...just carriages full of people with 70% or more staring at the phone. Some reading, some games, some social media - its harmless really and no different from a newspaper. I don't know why I have such an issue with it, but it is always depressing for me. I think it's because I feel people don't want to be inside their own heads and just take time to think/contemplate. There is always a need for a distraction. I wanna scream PUT YOUR PHONES DOWN - haha

    I've always got my earphones on when i'm out and about, although i try not to look at the screen of my phone too much.

    I guess part of the reason as to why people bury themselves in their phones is that they don't want to 'feel lonely'. People associate idleness as being lonely, hence the constant need to be seen as being 'active' and 'doing something'. Over time this becomes a habit and a default state, not that people actually are doing something meaningful on their phone. They might just be flicking through different tabs and browsing for some random interesting thing.

    I live in a crowded city and again part of the reason is the awkwardness of eye contact on public transport. I get on the metro and more often than not i have to stand in a awkward uncomfortable position. Sometimes it's better just to stare down at your phone than staring at the guy in front of you at almost kissing distance, or looking straight at someone else's armpits.

    Phones are a welcome distraction at times honestly. But certainly we're overusing them like mindless minions.

    Congrats! Was contemplating that for quite some time myself.

    I open it once a day to check notifications, and to chat when I'm on PC. Otherwise I don't use it, don't even check the feed. But I'm back again to using my phone when I wake up. I fall asleep if I don't.
