It's important to note that listening on different sources can sound very different. On my pair of bass-heavy IEMs the steroid kicks sound less annoying, because the lower bass extension makes the kick 'rounder' and smoother, much like on a club soundsystem. On a pair of balanced studio monitors (as well as other conventional earbuds/speakers), the steroid kick is more irritating on the ears because the bass is more lacking, allowing the high-frequency sharp thuds to come through.
