    In Celebration of Trance 2.0

A thread created in reaction to a recent post about how stale the trance 2.0 sound has become. The trance 2.0 / trouse sound, in my opinion, has been too often unfairly used as a scapegoat explaining the downfall of trance. True there have been some absolute stinkers in this style, but there were some absolute gems as well, most characterised by energetic, dynamic basslines, as well as strong, catchy chord stabs. Which certainly was a contrast to the increasingly stale plucky Anjuna uplifters that preceded it, with their predictable builds and almost identical groove amongst all tracks.

Above all, trance 2.0 in its early years was FUN and didn't take itself too seriously, unlike the largely pompous, self-righteous orchestral trance, that was pioneered and done well by a few, but shamelessly copied by others with none of the creativity of their predecessors.

As always, genre snobbists / purists very much seem to enjoy using the worst tracks as examples to generalise about the whole style, whilst failing to realise what they uphold as 'pure' or 'proper' progressive and uplifting trance (with their narrow minded view as to what is proper and what isn't) can actually be also just as stale and dire, and would probably bore most of them to oblivion were it not for such a label attached to it.

Of course, as with all genres, creativity and innovation within a certain style are bound to dry up over time, and trance 2.0 has not been immune to this either. But let's appreciate this genre for what it is, put away our egos for a while, and enjoy some of the top quality releases that this genre has offered.

Here are some of my picks, feel free to post yours too:

The first two are terrible - exactly the type of soul-less stabby-melody rising FX generic rubbish which i wouldnt even class as Trance. Its just born out of this modern EDM/festival sound.

The entire CD 1 and CD 2 of ASOT 2012 (might be nostalgia) and CD 1 of ASOT 2010 is a showcase of what I think is amazing about the so-called trance 2.0; Universal Religion 5 also counts. There are lots of good examples but as with modern uplifting, lots of bad stuff overshadows the good one. I listened to it up until 2013, then I gave up.

To be honest, I don't like a single track posted in this thread. I could post quite a lot since that whole style was my everything when I passed the vocal (pop-)trance initiation phase. Here are 2 random examples, perhaps not the best showcases but still good enough for a feature.

Listen to when that lead melody starts (3:33). Amazing sound. You wouldn't say the track makes your ears bleed. A bit louder than older progressive tracks, but still fairly balanced.

A bit of a leftover from 2010 trance and trance 2.0's beginning. Released in 2012, when that lead melody starts in the breakdown (3:34) it's brilliant. Still gives me shivers.

As I said, there's a lot more that's good about this sub-genre and its 2.0 period, so much that I just can't narrow it down to 10 or maybe 20.

Do not like this kind of music, but these two are tolerable for my ears

The logic behind this argument baffles me:

    - I do not like eating turds.
    * You can not possibly say that you do not like eating a single turd in the whole world.
    - Yes I can, I simply do not like it. I do not like the smell, the way it looks, and probably the way it tastes.
    * You are narrow minded.

    Case closed

Oh dear God you guys. Sure that sound wasn't in our taste and was done to death all too fast, but maybe we can just appreciate music for what it is?

Honestly I've become quite a bit more nostalgic for 2.0 now and regret largely ignoring it (largely because I took the purists on the forums at their word) back when it was big. That being said I do prefer the side of it that is "trancier" - more about the atmosphere and melody than the drop.

^Shogun was an absolute fucking genius with this sound IMO. At least his good tracks were.

^Nuera is also brilliant with this too.

Of course we should give some love to Mirage-era Armin when he was all about this sound, as well as the originators of the 2.0 name, A&B:

And of course, that one time BT blew every other 2.0 producer out of the water on A Song Across Wires:

And I can think of a bunch of other artists and examples.

Yeah I'm really with @PeenutsDx on this. Trance, or any genre of music for that matter, thrives the most when it has enough flexibility of sound to keep a consistent identity, but also not take itself too seriously. 2.0 was (and in its good forms still is) a much-needed shot in the arm for the genre, and it's here to stay. And when it's good, it's damn good

The same reasons people complain about this genre are the same reasons it's so good.

Mirage is full of gems. Perhaps my favourite track from the album. Nice, clean, but not too noisy. Plus, it's pretty good musically as well.

Proof that ideas and trance sub-genres, when not exhausted and taken to the extreme, can still sound good - mainstream stuff too.

This is a lot cheesier, but still impactful.

A lot of you will disagree with me on this, but I just love it. Watched how he made this, was impressed. Perhaps my favourite 2012 track.

Loved this as well. Great stuff. 1.7 million views! That's a lot!

    Here are a few more.

    This one is pretty special.

MAN I need to relisten to UR5.

Damn what a trip down the memory lane.

Props for bringing up I Don't Own You! It's also one of my favorite tracks from Mirage along with the title track.

I'm more a fan of the Andy Moor remix. It's like the original but expanded:
