One of the hardest things to do as a dj is play tunes that you dont personally love. Its even harder to play tunes of that you don't like from a completely different genre.
If you want to introduce some dance/trance into your set then why not throw an a few mashups and remixes. The main reason why people only like "commercial" tracks is because the average music listener only likes what they recognize. You can even notice it when you're out and about in the clubs - the crowd reacts best to melodies and vocals that they already know and love.
My suggestion - play what the crowd wants to hear, because that's your job as a dj. Whether you're in a top 40 club or a warehouse hosting an underground rave, if you are the only person enjoying what you're spinning, people will leave thinking how they'd have rather just listened to the radio
Along with the mainstream/commercial tunes you can play some Madonna remixes, play the Blake Jarrell remix of ‘Chasing Cars’, throw in Prydz vs Pink Floyd – The Wall, Sander van Doorn has a cool remix of a Missy Elliot tune I think, one of the Swedish House Mafia boys has a remix of an old Metallica track, Piece Process released a groovy remix of “How Does it Feel”, and don’t forget pop remixes like Justin Timberlake’s “Sexy Back”.
I know I’m no Armin – just throwing you my two cents!
Good luck, and have FUN!!!
