yeah, that was the conundrum hehe - i decided to just take it on a different approach and mood hehe. If you sample that main lead, then it could just be a slowed version of the original hehe - i like to take things away from the original.

Sounds lovely.
Really hard to remix this track and make it sound unique given how many versions there are out there.
Using your own lead sound instead of trying to recreate the original is probably a good move in giving it that unique flavour!

Nice work.

I decided to have a go myself, and this is the best I could come up with:

Used Vital for this.
Saw wave with a Pulse wave mixed in, x6 unison with the detune quite low, band pass filter with a bit of a pluck envelope on the filter.
Layered another simple pluck underneath to give it that bit extra. Chorus, reverb, delay.

It's close but still missing a certain something of the original.
Probably worth looking up the synth he used, the oscillator waveform, the filter and chorus from the original synth probably give it that secret sauce.

D'oh!

I forgot I have a JP8000 emulator called JP6k
Tried the same thing on that and:

Much closer. Still not 100% there, but with a bit of work...

There was this chillout mix done ages ago - not sure if thats the original lead synth sampled - but id thought id go down a different sounding route myself.

Also,Touchstone made a pretty good remix years back.

Which makes me wonder why didnt more producers have that effect on their melodies - im not sure if any other tracks had it?

A fair few did. Just the Synaesthesia lead sounded so distinctive.
Meet Her At the Love Parade lead uses a band pass filter. The 2 oscs are detuned by a few semitones which gives it that dissonant feel and there's no unison used, it's the same technique though.
