Spectrum serves as the closing piece in Sven Väth’s imaginary 1992 trance trilogy, following Transpulsation and My Name Is Barbarella. Of the three, it stands closest to Väth’s techno roots, as its more melodic passages are frequently interrupted by mechanical, rhythmic techno sections. To such an extent, in fact, that the track could easily be described as a techno–trance hybrid, much like Omnibus by Time to Time — another important 1992 production.
In any case, the piece effectively illustrates the trance-oriented direction Sven sought to take with his labels at the time. The track was later remixed by Caspar Pound, and in 2023, it received a remastered release under the Spectrum Revisited EP. It unquestionably ranks among the strongest trance tracks of its year, though to me personally, it is perhaps the least replayable of Väth’s works from that period.
