Well, the tune switches between key-scales quite harshly to create drama and tension. It works well. It’s sort of awkward, but that’s the whole point of it. To make you feel a little odd.

It can be fun to experiment with out-of-key-scale notes. If you overdo it, you will perceive them as “false note” indeed. If you do it subtle, it can create tension.

I remember this theme faintly from the film - sounds like it translates great to a trance track - great effort overall! Theres just one piano note that sounds out of tune to me - but it might just be my ears hehe!
The original is in this scale that took me a while to work out. It's in E Melodic Minor, which is similar mode to the regular E Minor but with the C D & G moved to C#, D# & D#
It's just different enough that it can sound a little bit dissonant as the melody progresses in a way that seems strange compared to the normal minor mode.

I just put this on Twitter/X to show what it sounds like in the traditional minor.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! 🥰

Its lovely to see this type of discussion around notes and off key, I would love to learn more, what is the first step to understanding all this? Try remixing a classic using midi? Piano lessons? (Anything free virtual) which supports usb keyboard?

It's the same key as the original btw. There is no out-of-tune note either, even if it sounds a bit off. Speak to Harold Faltermeyer if you want clarification, he wrote the damned thing :p 😁

Check the original:

I see what you mean mate - he probably made it that way to suit the dissonant, futuristic feel of the movie. Really need to watch it again!
