The thing is, if you are in Armins position, you have a huge opportunity to do whatever you like music wise. You can make anything, get help from anyone, afford anything, achieve anything. The possibilities for him are endless.

Wel theres a question for all us producers - if we were in his position, what would we all do. Id still be making music i love and not catering to a specific trend or sound. But i suppose he did that to get to where he is today. Id love to hear the back story of Tiesto - going from making all that early Trance to the 'pop' collabs he does now - is it all about the money and fame?

of course you'd do. and it would probably sell average, not working well on big stages and your management that helped you get 'there' would left you for someone who'd be able to pay their salary. you know you can't pay your bills with 'u know our boss is so true to his sound, he just doesn't care about the trends at all'? and then you'd quickly stop being in that position :)

same goes for Tiesto, any big name. what we see barely scratches the surface of the bigger picture.

true that but I can imagine that's fun for just some time and then it's the same routine as for any smaller guys, maybe even more boring because there's no challenge for him playing this game with godmode=on.

@Magdelayna what I say is that certain environment dictates certain rules

when music is your hobby you can treat it whatever you like, if you quit tomorrow nobody gets affected

for guys like Armin, his income from music defines the budget of his family and a lot of people in his team's income, so his career does not belong to him solely in a way, he has to follow his management that is picking the best moves for him, from a commercial perspective obviously. there's surely still some space for artistic freedom but it's limited

weird this needs to be explained

He's also doing a b2b with Tiesto as Alibi I think I saw somewhere which is a bit weird. But as others have said he's so big now he can do what he wants. He's just a dance music producer now so can float around all over.

makes sense why ASOT Instagram congratulated Tiesto on his birthday the other day, seemed weird when it happened

I believe the thing is, they're both aging and inevitably getting less popular so such occasional team-ups could boost the attention from their classic times fans, it's like the last thing they got left to get some extra hype

not sure what's going on with their personal relationships these days, about a decade ago there's been lots of rumors and some videos of how Armin copies Tiesto in various things and details

No fucking way! noooo way! But if they do that and focus on real proper trance, oldschool and new one, then it can be epic. But I HIGHLY doubt it will ever happen.

Quick sidenote that there is one valid exception to that, and that is the architypical "trailblazing artist/ company". (not saying armin is that this day and age, but for academic sake)

Basically the trend-setter instead of the trend follower. Must be noted that this is a high risk - high return type of endevour. Madonna's overall early carreer is a good example of this aswell as Deadmau5.

Double sidenote. the relationship between Maykel Piron and Armin is, even that on a commercial level, a bit like that of Gwynne Shotwell and Elon Musk. Yes she handles a lot of the press and day to day operations of space X but she is not "picking the moves" for him or telling him "which type of rocket is trendy now"

true that. the closest when Armin was to being a trend-setter is his Imagine album which was a much more pop album then anything in trance albums released at these times

and even that is trend-setting in a more of a marketing way, not exactly musically. with all the respect, I cannot consider Armin to be an extraordinary talented artist, he was solid from the early days, some tracks became classics but nothing gamechanging.

ironically, even the ARTBAT guys fit the 'trend-setting' term more, their remix of Monolink - Return To Oz was like the first big BIG melodic techno track and it definitely set certain 'rules' for the genre in terms of sound design and tracks structure

just checked the track itself finally

nothing too special for its style, not bad though. but those age-of-love (or some other 90s classic) kinda styled rhythmic 'ah' vocal sample during the build-up made me cringe, it's so vulgar to use these in a modern production pretending 'hey there are my classic trance roots'.
