Started a nice WIP (work in progress) tonight.
What style / sub genre would you say this was? Trance/House / (Techno). Space Trance? Or something else? To me it’s quite an old sounding trance feel.


More to add both to what’s there and to extend it. (Current outro just for WIP purposes).

Please let me know in comments if you like the feel / some of the structure.
Also, please let me know if posting wips is annoying.

I like hearing very early musical "sketches" (so to speak) as there's a real rawness to it and also the idea that it could go absolutely anywhere from here. this has potential, if it were my tune I'd go full platipus/coredata and go crazy with the 303's and some trippy polyrhythms. love the percs. I won't do any stern critique on this though as it's so early in the process

Yes indeed I also thought about adding a 303, so good confirmation that it could work, cheers. Ahh the wonderful Platipus. Union Jack and Art of Trance. Favourites of mine back in the day . Not as familiar with coredata, but rings a bell. Cool. Trippy is definitely a direction I like going.

Setting levels in particular, the volume can be difficult. When effects are applied to sounds, their volume/presence changes. Often drops. Automateing effects in an out causes mahem lol. Can’t wait till I sort out the volumes on this, then I can get back to arrange much more. As you can hear, the arrangement gets weaker towards the end as I’ve been focusing very much on sound design. Gonna drop the reverb on the acid, it’s drowning the mix. Might have it soloed with that reverb further down when the track is nearer 8 mins, which ever length it will be.
And when I work on this track again that sound won’t disappear for 8 bars at 1.55 when the kick comes in. Dropping it hasn’t worked. Tried a few things, but that area is back to the drawing board . Mucks the flow completely.

For a long intro and buildup the track is only 4 mins long. That's surprising. I would have thought there would be an outro and a climax too to make it at least 8-10 mins long.

Oh it’s going to be much longer. This is only a work in progress. I’ve had an idea about when the kick comes in. I now like that that sound dissapears, I am going to try re introducing the same melody but with a different sound around 8 bars (like the current sound does) or 16 bars later. A powerful sound (hopefully) which can bring up the vibe of the track to match the more upbeat/ dance sections. I’ve no idea how long this track will be in the end. I may actually bring the kick in earlier, there’s only a purpose for long intros if there’s enough variety setting the atmosphere in them, and I’m not sure there is here, so il play around with it. Might bring the kick in around 15- 45 seconds earlier
