Not too keen on the melody - a very generic chord pattern you feel you have heard 100's of times before.

The chord progression is not generic at all.
It's trying to be unique too much for me. It's forced, as if the objective was to make it "weird". But it lacks any proper story-telling for me.
Therefor it feels a bit random.

think you're referring to different things - Magde is saying about the rhythmic structure which is nothing too special indeed and Magne is appealing to the chords themselves that are a bit too much 'not for everyone' so in a way you're both right
