Sciatica (Back/Nerve Pain)

Anyone suffer from this?

I had it bad last year but recently been fine,lifting heavy stuff at work etc. and no pain.

Then on Sunday i was sat down all day in front of the TV,then i got up,lifted my 8ft Xmas Tree with one hand and i pulled something..now im in agony. Cant even put my socks on. Pain on my right lower back,all the way down my leg.

Can small little things just trigger it off? I dont get it as i lift loads of heavt stuff at work...

If I don't continue this stretch once a week, I get pain.

I suggest Barbell Medicine website for all things pain and injury, they have a nice approach I think. Lots of great, free content.

I had it a few times already, usually caused by putting too much stress on my back, bad body position (sitting) or bad lifting form. Always passed without any intervention within a couple of days.

I have a few friends with similar ailments, I know they struggle with these pains from time to time. My father also had this type of problem from manual labor. there were times when he got out of bed in the morning with a loud roar. Usually it ended with sick leave and injections. He always made sure not to blow him over and was careful how he lifted heavy objects. Currently, I have a colleague at work who very often has a similar effect and you can immediately see when he enters that he has been broken

I had the pain for the last 2 weeks - and then on Fridy i went for a long walk up a steep mountain,and i even slipped on my back on the way back down. These last 2 days after, the pain has subsided quite a bit - so does a walk on uneven ground,and even slipping,does that somehow 'untrap' the nerve or something?

could be, did you see a physotherapist for this?

No,ive just been taking ibuprofen/paracetamol. I had the same thing a year ago,and it gradually went away. But it seems a nerve isnt right somewhere,it can be tweaked and then it causes me weeks of pain...i have to watch what im doing when i suddenly get up of from watching a film etc...its like im not warmed up or something.

No,ive just been taking ibuprofen/paracetamol. I had the same thing a year ago,and it gradually went away. But it seems a nerve isnt right somewhere,it can be tweaked and then it causes me weeks of pain...i have to watch what im doing when i suddenly get up of from watching a film etc...its like im not warmed up or something.
what type of sports/excersizes do you do?

ah, can relate. I used to odd-job in a cooling cell, shuffling 10-20 kilo crates of apples, potatoes etc. My posture wasn't up to snuff and so within 2 years i had a lot of pain in my mid to lower back.

fysiotherapy combined a backbrace helped me out a lot.

I had no idea you did manual labor at some point. Was this during college / before you completed your architecture degree?

Oh I had a number of odd jobs to pay for my college/living even before i attended TU Delft. Started when I was 15.

In random order i've been:
- Facilitairy personel in a hospital (bringing food around, cleaning, the occasional corpse to the morgue transport etc.)
- Lorry driver/general warehouse employee in the aforementioned cooling cell (loading trucks on and off, inventory stuff/packaging etc.)
- Lifeguard @ the Dutch Islands (RWC Pilot/ 4WD Driver, rescue swimmer etc.)
- Tomato/Paprika plucker in several greenhouses,
- Gardner

As well as a lot of freelance stuff.

well, damn. That's pretty badass. Your interviewers were probably impressed with your work ethic and drive to succeed.

thnx but, I didn't mention them 😄 believe me, not a single architecture company is interrested in my weightlifting and swimming capacity, they care about how well and fast you can design stuff 😉

I have the exact same thing.
Dont lift heavy stuff anymore.

If you know the stretch exercises you don’t need to visit physiotherapist. He will just give you those.

When I had it real bad for the 2nd time, I went to another specialist. Not sure what it’s called. It was in Germany. But he looks more at the cause, and not only what is painful and just fix that. So maybe some parts aren’t fully “straight”and they try to fix that, leading to fixing your pain as end result.

That really did a lot for me. In stead of 6 to 8 weeks it was way better in 1-2 weeks.

The first time it did not appear instantly, but over a few days. Im pretty sure what was the trigger though.
I was climbing on a wall (with those colored grips, good English Jan lol). And my foot slipped, and with trying to hold on, I think I forced something in my back. A nerve slightly out of position or whatever.

took my 6-8 weeks before it really was gone completely. Also couldn’t put on my socks in the beginning.

second time, like a year later, was more instant. Lifting a heavy machine. Instantly knew that injury was back. Couldn’t even lay down. Good nights of sleep.

to try and avoid a long recovery I went to the German specialist, On paper it’s part of “manueel therapie”. It’s normal healthcare in Germany, but in NL it’s “alternative”. Difficult to explain in English. He looks at bones and muscles whether their positions are natural. Hip position might not be fully straight. Etc.

My back hurt more right after the threatments, normal, as your body has to re-adjust sort of. After a few hours that decreases, and overall recovery was way faster.

Yeah its the shit. i'm getting manueel therapie weekly now that I have to nighly lift a 12 kilogram ape every night for half an hour wilst my muscles are still in semi-REM modus.

daily-planking also seems to help
