I see quite some techno labels and artists are now going the trance route, mostly the old school hypnotic kinda trance which is a cool direction but if you take this track in particular - it got no balls, no real drive, no real depth, no groove, no details. most of the synths are way too modern and sterile and especially the processing is too basic and safe.

and that key change to the main riff doesn't sound good to me, like at all.

it takes much more than just replicating the melodies and sound design to create a great old school sounding tune

Doesn't do much for me but I wouldn't say it's bad. Just extremely simple - but we had loads of those back then as well, no?

never been into mr. Fitzpatrick music, this one sounds like something from B&J, maybe inspired by this one

The choice of instruments is excellent! The melody is rather boring to me however, so I likely won't find myself listening to this a lot. Very good attempt at making a classic sounding track, regardless.

This track would have never been signed by a major label if it wasn't for the well-known artists.
ironically, you can say thay about A LOT of the tracks released by major trance labels haha, technically (sound engineering, mixing, mastering) they're normally the same level as mid-range labels (that's not some insane level that would be difficult to get, even though majors could try and provide the real exclusive quality to their releases if they'd give a shit) and melodically often ever worse 'cause big names don't bother with something catchy, the track in this thread is a perfect example
