Modern football sucks. No soul. No magic.

Hah OK I am not totally in disagreement, but remember 2019 champions league, it was fucking insane. Man City vs Tottenham was amazing, Mora's hatrick comeback against Ajax and then of course Liverpools unreal comeback from 3:0 down against barca with a MAGICAL quick corner from Trent. So magic can still happen mate for sure. The Prem league in 19/20 was also a 1 point difference, with each team winning 16 games in a row to maintain the race (liv and city).

So much excitement for Turkey to play Austria today. With a good performance we can move to the next round, which is much more than I can hope for in the tournament.

Completely disagree. Kane kicks towards the defenders leg and makes the contact himself. A very soft penalty.

That said, I thought England dominated the match after that point, so maybe not too hard done by in the end.
It was pretty evenly matched and all in all a fair game imo. Yellow cards galore yea but not of it single sided/ partisan.

Gg

do kick spain’s ass on our behalf please 😎

The thing is, the English team dominated in the first half, AFTER that penalty.

The exremely weird decision to give a penalty does not only affect the score (which is literaly half of the score gifted)....

But it also affects the morale on the field. The English team suddenly got into attacking mode and the Dutch suddenly became more affraid. More chaos, more stress.

There weren't even English player asking for a penalty. Nobody thought it was.

The second half was much more even, the English team was defending a lot again, it was pretty boring actually.

The ref kept ruining the game, giving free kicks when literally nothing happened, giving cards when in the replay you could see there was barely contact.

What about the Weghorst/Walker (was it Walker?) duel in the box. They both had both hands all over each other. Our commentator even said: Uhh maybe they should get a room. And then it's a foul from Weghorst? How? They both had both hands completely around the other dude. If it's a foul, then it's also a penalty, as it's the exact same behavior the other player had on Weghorst.

And there are dozens of examples. Van Dijk who thought he deserved a corner (in replay you could clearly see the English player 5 headed the ball). But for unknown reasons the English got a free kick and Van Dijk a yellow card. When they just walked alongside each other, nothing happened.

Don't think I was annoyed by "the ref against the Dutch". It was an aweful tournament imo. Not only in this match. What about the hands ball from Cucurella against Germany? How is that not a penalty? It's a million dollar sports, but it's based on unexplainable referee decisions.

Footbal, you are hilarious again. This sport is broken.

The difficult situation is that there are unwritten and unacknowledged rules for play in the box. If a defender pushes someone off balance in the box they won’t be penalized. If you do in the middle of the field the ref will call it. There is a different threshold which we all are observing. My POV is a foul in any where else in the game should still also be a foul in the box. If I consider the unspoken box rules then it is harsh to give that penalty to England. If I consider the actual rules of the game then it is a foul, because if it happened in midfield and you miss a challenge with no ball touched and with the full studs raised making contact then it is not just a clear foul, but a yellow card 9 in the 10 times. No one would disagree with the call if in mid field, that is maybe how the referee viewed it.

The difficult situation is that there are unwritten and unacknowledged rules for play in the box.

This is a good thing I think, and VAR is kind of in conflict with the secret rules, because it puts a microscope on something that feels impossible to measure. If the rules were applied objectively and consistently then the amount of penalties given in a game would increase dramatically and it would ruin the game. The secret rules determine that the same foul inside and outside the box is treated differently, and honestly I think we all want this to be the case. We recognize that the game will be ruined if we are too mathematical with our rules. Even the 1cm toe offside people don't really like, despite it being the rules. But that all comes at a cost, which is ambiguity, subjectivity and luck. It's a trade off. We want both objective consistency and subjective human intuition. Unfortunately both are not compatible in sports 1 to 1.

I think because Kane looked like he wasn't going to score regardless of what happened we all deep down think it shouldn't be a pen. This time the ref chose rigid objectivity over intuitive decision making, which is why it feels wrong to award it. Luck in the end.

Why don't they explain their VAR decisions, like the refs in NFL? How hard is it to mic up a ref?

What about the extra time? Spain players on the floor all the time. Cucurella a full minute with the “head injury”. They played aprox 1,5 minute of 4.

Referee ends at exactly 4:00 extra time.

How is it fair? Happy I only started watching 85:00 into the game. Football is stupid. Unfortunately. :)
