I hate that I know the answer to this, but I'll bite. This is something I found on a reddit discussion.

A lot of the JP content comes from JAV (Japanese Adult Video). The videos from JAV are made to a professional standard much like those from the US/Czech republic, in contrast to the more independent productions from China and other countries.
There are a few differences between the output of JAV and that from Western content:

• On average, the stars look more "natural." Yes, you have your wacky stars like Hitomi, but in general they've gone through much less plastic surgery than Western stars. If you think about it, stars like Rhoades and Khalifa are all plastic, and that can be a huge turn-off. Just looking at relatively SFW pictures from the Western stars you can tell they look plasticky and in the realm of the uncanny valley.
• Building up on the previous point: JP actresses look classier than most actresses. Like, if you put a dress on Julia you could totally present her to your parents. You couldn't do the same with Rhoades; they would likely think she's trashy. The same applies to many of the top Western stars.
• In Western media, the male stars are generally Type A muscular, buff, ripped dudes. There are a few exceptions, but the norm is what I just described. In Japanese media the male stars are largely regular dudes. I don't have to explain why seeing regular dudes in your video of choice is better than seeing muscular ripped buff dudes (if you're a straight guy).
• The censorship means the directors and filmmakers have to get more creative than just PIV shots. In Japanese media they focus more on the entire body of the actress, not just her intimate parts. In Western media, a large chunk of videos is straight-up PIV, which frankly isn't that appealing.

All that said, I am not familiar with the... ahem... "alternative anime." I don't know why people would like that, but in general we're all degenerates anyways.
