OUT Narel - What Your Cause Will Be [Pure Progressive]

Australia’s Narel (JOOF, Forescape Digital, Green Martian) drops a hefty slab of 125 bpm Trance (Raw / Deep / Hypnotic) (taken from Pure Progressive Vol. 3) with an old school Hooj vibe that features a widescreen production including some fab filtered stabs and a gorgeous, tingly breakdown.

If Matt Darey would have produced his Li Kwan - Point Zero in 2023, I imagine it would have sounded something like this.

Too ploddy for me. No, its too chugging, the constant beat at this pace just gets on my nerves. Too little rhytmical variety i think. The sound design/texture are nice but it doesnt save it. There are way better Narel tunes imo.

amazing tune, reminds me of Kalafut & Fygle - 3579 km, just a little less dynamic and without such memorable main theme. anyways - amazing record and pure joy to listen to it

It sounds very nice yessss. But I am the same at needing more from the beats which has mentioned as plod at the top. The progressive from PURE is hard to always enjoy because they always have very flat groove and beats compared to past decades prog.

That style of percussion has become dominant in prog and I really really like it. A shaker hats driven consistent groove which I use a lot. A rare example of my ear liking something identified as 'modern'. This track started out a lot darker and more stripped out but it went nowhere. I kept the percussion and single hits/blobs/blips - so that's why its there - but then took it off in a melodic direction. I'm 42, so I love late 90's/early 00's prog, but that percussion style wouldn't have worked with the rest of the ideas - as they were all built around the 'plod'.
I remember some similar comments on the Matahari remix which had similar percs.

If you are going to do progressive, I know you've done a lot dark sounding tracks. I would ideally would love to hear more warmer tracks something like this I know it's not progressive but a fusion would be wonderful.

Just getting around to this. The melodic elements and vocals I really love, just a great job. But I have to agree with some comments that the beats offer too little movement or contribution to rhythmic flow too. It does feel chugging and rigid, which to me is always my least favorite way of enjoying progressive music. Do enjoy the track though.

p.s There is a synth FX used in there though that sounds like somethign in Medway - Ressurection, that an influence?

I know the bit you mean, indirectly yes, in so far as Hooj is my is fav label ever and I do like that Medway track, but I didn't have that in mind when I made that sound. The release write up from the label mentioned 'Hooj Choons stabs', and some others have picked up on that too : )
