Separate (classics) section for posting post-2010 tracks

Its not like there are so many classics posted. On the old forum it was like 0, 1 or 2 per day. Post 2010 was hardly posted at all.

Its more now obviously since there is a contest going on...

A bit of a controversial opinion but... Is it maybe an idea to ditch the word 'classic' in general? I still think the word's a bit too broad, the first person thinks of a track that stood the test of time, another thinks it needs to be just an example of what the genre used to be and a third one sees songs they've enjoyed a lot as classics for instance. They obviously clash with each other and if we keep on using the word then I can see the possibilty that we fail to come to a solution everyone agrees with.

What are we going to have then?

Trance releases

ehm....

If anything there should be more specialised/split areas rather than less.

I think the ‘by decade‘ suggestion is the best possible solution to keep the majority happy.

Why look back at the old forum as a guide. Are we not trying to create a new and thriving community here on these new boards?

I think it’s the opposite of strange to not want modern era tracks in amongst.

I understand your reasoning. However, more people are online in general nowadays, too. Look at the upcoming releases section, now more than 50% of the posts have more than 4 replies as opposed to the original site, where most of the posts had none.

The site is also far more mobile friendly which makes it easier to interact in general

I think not many cares about 2011 because that is almost 10 years ago. But what about songs that are 1-2-3-4 etc year old. Those songs only have various threads like the currently listening thread and the other various genre threads to be posted in. And there they will be forgotten and not seen at all. I think very few new users would be bothered to go look through 80 pages of the currently listening thread or other threads.

I remember when we found out trancefix was closing everyone agreed that forum would be the only place trancefix should live on. Because in reddit, and other platforms the songs just vanished as time went on and nobody will see or read the posts. Its the same for big threads.

I joined trancefix in 2005 and i cant remember exactly when that section was added but it has to be taken into consideration that years and years of classics was already posted. Here we have like 2 pages, i doubt very hard it will calm down anytime soon.

Where to post depends on what you want with the topic:

- If you want to share a 2017-track, you can post it in (upcoming) trance releases. The upcoming is not between brackets for no reason. It doesn't have to be upcoming. For quick casual sharing, there is indeed a currently-listening-to thread.

- If your goal of the 2017-track is more a discussion approach, to talk about let's say the impact of the track, or talk about the producers career, etc, then a topic in Music Discussion works.

- If you believe a 2017-track is a wonderful classic and that's the perspective of your thread, then yes, post it in Classics Releases. Obviously, if you do that, there might be people saying it's so new, it's not a classic for them. But the discussion is the whole point of a forum.

Again, I don't understand the debate. There are (almost?) never tracks posted in the Classics Area that are "clearly way too new". Now one track from 2011 was posted, and history repeats: "that's not a real classic".

Plus: We did this game already in 2004, when purists said Gouryella, Tiesto, Svenson & Gielen, Ferry's 'Punk' etc, were extremely commercial, bad, and not real trance. And ironically, that's exactly the sort of music you dó want to share... Because it's a classic for you.

I see your point. I think the debate arose because it just felt off seeing standard 2010s tracks and 1990s anthems tracks posted in the same section.

Edit: I suggest changing the name and description of the upcoming releases section then, it says something else compared to the old forum now.

Basically my take on this is:

Keep the classics section as it is - the year shouldn't make matter when deciding whether a track is a classic or not; setting a cutoff is arbitrary anyway and makes no musical sense; there are plenty of crap tracks produced pre-2010 that exist in the classics section too so excluding tracks by year would be pointless in terms of quality control

Add a separate post-2010 release section: tracks here can exist both here and in the classics section, it shouldn't be mutually exclusive; often times we may want to share a track that we wouldn't necessarily call a classic yet but nonetheless wouldnt classify as current either.

Upcoming releases: for releases from this month onwards, same as before

Not spitting my dummy out here, but this just doesn't sit well with me at all having this modern crap littered in a 'classics' section.

Whether that's simply my own personal opinion and not the wider view then who knows, but nothing modern day (including some modern tracks I enjoy and some a lot) will ever be deemed classics to me and will never belong there.

There's only one 2011 track there so far yeah, but look how much controversy and discussion it's already causing. It's had more talk than all those genuine classics in the section.

I'll still be looking in mate (didn't mean completely leaving) and know things aren't going to be perfect from the start, but I'm only really here for this section.

I also feel limited without the classic discussion area and feel that there should be more specialised areas rather than just music discussion.

We have been over the fact that it wasn't very active on the old boards, but just because it wasn't before doesn't mean it will be this time round.

I just want an area for discussing all things older Trance, and not just the odd thread in amongst general music.

Plenty of feedback given, but it doesn't seem like anything is being taken onboard by the replies. Rather just written off or argued against.

Edit: I really want the place to do well and become a thriving community, which is why I shared the link already on our Youtube community area and also in the Trance Classics group. I was waiting for the URL to be sorted so the image appears before sharing it onto our Facebook page too.

I'd expect a good number to sign up from our 40k+ fanbase there and I'm sure most of those would also be into the older, retro sounds too.

We're definitely reading all the feedback you and everyone else have written and, as said before, we're currently working on the best solution, but we are a very small team and have our day-to-day lives as well to take care of.

I can't say when there'll be a "solution" to this, but it will come; Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but it's high on our list of priorities.

It's fair if you're here for that section alone and it's a section we all care deeply for (just look at the amount of replies and threads in that section) and that's why this takes time.

Nothing has been decided yet, no counter-arguments were there for you to not have what you wished for. The counter-arguments (at least my own) were there for the sake of healthy discussion and decision making. And in the end, that's how we'll decide. We all have our differing opinions, even among the board.

Sorry to see you leave, but as you said, what makes a track classic is a personal thing, and there was one track from 2011, not half of them. If the track is bad it will get no replies, and will get cleaned up at some point with all 0-replies threads. Whether I agree with it personally is another thing, and that's where the discussion comes in. I also don't agree that you could call that track a classic, but maybe there are some tracks from those years that could be considered (at least future) classics. Lolo - Laia's Daydream is from 2014 and for me, it's a classic already.

We'll definitely discuss more and come up with a solution taking all the facts and viewpoints into consideration until a consensus is reached.

I know there's only one so far, I did mention this....I just don't want to see this area begin to fill up with these sorts of modern productions where it becomes the norm and it seems from some of the replies that this is the way it's to remain. I mean there are tracks from 2014,15 etc that I think are great (for example from Airwave) but would never think to post them in there even when they hit 10 years old.

I know we've all our individual views here which makes it a mission in keeping everyone happy, but I do feel a cut off date of some sort would probably be for the best in terms of keeping things somewhat old school.

Out with ourselves, Binary Finary who run the other classics group on FB have said nothing after 2005 will be approved on their own, and whilst I'd maybe disagree with their choice of year, I'd still much prefer this than having any generic modern day sounds.

Of course I understand the whole younger fans thinking the latest bangers are going to be classics and so on...even those rare few they may remember in 10 years time, I just can't accept them being posted in this particular section.

You can say something is from 'your own golden era' as a fan of any age depending when you got into the music, but surely it means from the golden era of the genre as a whole (which to me is from the early 90's - 2006 or thereabouts).

Anyway, sorry if I seem ranty haha, I'm not leaving altogether guys (sorry) just stepping away for now and will look in and see how things pan out

People have different opinions about music. So yes, sometimes music you don't like WILL be liked by somebody else. If you can't handle that, then a forum is not your cup of tea I suppose.

Stick to your 2014 'golden era' bangers then mate haha.

I assume you are referring to the 'glory days' of around 1998 to 2002 or so when Trance peaked in terms of popularity. Golden era in terms of production, originality and so on stretches much further back though to when Trance music was in its infancy and far more experimental, soulful and memorable than the cookie cutter stuff of later times.

Yeah a post 2010 section sounds good - i wouldnt have them all in the exisitng classics section as it would just clog it up.

In contrary to what Darren said qualifies as a classic,i disagree - im a '99 Trancer,love all the old skool classics - BUT i also have modern classics - for example the insrumental of 'Richard Durand - The Air I Breathe' is a Trance classic to me......and its from 2018.

Good point - we all voted to still have a proper forum - so use it how its supposed to be used with different sections - that would point to a decade by decade approach. It wouldnt clutter the forum,besides thats the main thing its here for - to talk about Trance tracks?
