What do you think about Japanese trance?

it sure has a special vibe with the extra playful melodies and rich arrangements, although the latest generation of Japanese producers seem to lack this identity a lot and sound much more like everyone else, and also some of the seasoned Japanese producers are disappearing from the scene in recent years
Yeah, ZTS, Graffias (aka syatten), void, Junk, Housei Satoh and others were the legends of J-Trance...
to be honest, I have never intentionally followed any of Japanese artists, noticing Japanese trance being slightly different to the mainstream sound by hearing their tracks occasionally in some DJ sets ans radioshows over past decade.. one name that comes to mind is Nhato, he's releasing some forward thinking tech trance
I have over 1700 tracks in my playlist, probably not even 10 of them are made from Japanese producers. Those 10 mostly consist of GOA stuff produced by Tsuyoshi Suzuki.
Otherwise the first thing that comes to mind is Hiroyuki Oda – Transmigration / Injection from 2006 which is a pretty good release

Definitely, a different take of european trance.
There is a japanese trance duo called The Originators, their track "Prismatic" is monumental...

Looks like they are enjoying the underground, and whatever else you would call this set. Super fun. They played one of my favorite Glen S tracks, Superfast XI. (Minna-no-kimochi, Boiler Room Tokyo)
I remember back in the early days the Japanese also had a taste for the very cheesy but quite fun dream trance. I came across a hard copy of this Japanese Import CD in 2002, and I was unashamedly a huge fan of this mix back in the day. (System F vs Armin: Trancematch)

I didn't even know it existed. Japan is such a strange country, for some reason very influential at yet such an outsider and isolated society (at least that's what is seems to me). Are there even Japanese producers on labels like JOOF/Pure Trance/Deepersense/Forescape/Borderline/Anjuna etc. ?

Push made this beauty in collaboration with Tetsuya Komuro - Tranceformation. Besides Yoji and Hiroyuki Oda, I also liked releases by Remo-Con. Same techy stuff Yoji made.
While Transmigration is probably his most famous track due to its appearance on ASOT 2006 CD2, Hiroyuki Oda has many great releases which have that similar feel but sadly are not very well known or popular.
I can really recommend the whole Thirty album which is very consistent in terms of sounds but also a quality.
Tracks like Day Break, Amethyst and especially Yozora are my favourites from the album.
As for his other releases I can recommend tracks like Rise, Impulsion or one of his most recent releases - Polaris.

To me, J-trance is basically regular uplifting/progressive trance but with a more light and playful melody as opposed to a euphoric and/or melancholic one, like these songs from Bernis' compilation album Hymnal for Halcyon Days:
Even though I really like this more cheerful approach, the beatwork unfortunately feels very same-y across all songs to me, meaning that only the ones with a really good melody stick with me as a result.

Growing up my taste in music was more of the Electronic side, first album i bought in the early 70s was Autobahn by Kraftwerk, listened to all the big names around then, Tangerine Dream, Jean Michel Jarre, which led me onto discovering such Japanese producers like Kitaro and YMO (Yellow Magic Ochestra). I guess from growing up and listening to all that led me to Trance, even though in the 80s i was also big into New Wave, Synth Pop but hey, i was just a teenager. 
Not too up with my knowledge of Japanese Trance producers but do like some of the earlier stuff from Ayumi Hamasaki, even though i tend to play more the dub versions as the vocal mixes sometimes don't 'fit' in to my sets/radio shows but she has been remixed by a lot of the greats out there, Airwave, Ferry Corsten, Svenson & Gielen, Marc Et Claude, Darren Tate and Above and Beyond.

Look at this boiler room set from Tokyo. Have you ever seen Boiler Room do Trance? And look at the crowd, it is one of the most alive ones seen in their youtube. OK not everything is Trance in this mix, as has lot of hardcore and even what feels like dubstep inspired music. But also it has Trance classics and nice proggressive too. The mixing skill of these two young fellaz is something to behold. We should be happy the Trance roots are strong all the way in Japan, and with the young crowd. The genre never dies, it lives on.
