Yes, domestic workers can easily find jobs outside of twitter. That is not a problem. They have the skills and face no hurdles getting employed by a competitor.
H1B visa workers can't just move somewhere else on a whim. They have to apply for a visa again and find an employer that will sponsor then, which is expensive. Not only that, but the # of H1B visas is limited. With all the layoffs happening right now, US companies *won't* hire these immigrant workers. Instead, the competitor companies can hire a domestic worker that was laid off from elsewhere. The H1B worker simply cannot compete in the US tech industry right now, as someone domestic could very well do their job.

Hm interresting. No I didn't know that, The work- Visa procedure in NL works differently, less restrictive at least judging by my father in law's procedure here.
It, from the salary strokes I have seen however doesn't look like their 1 underpayed and recieve royal compesation and even benefits (concerning potential re-application elsewhere) and 2 as for finding potential sponsors: You are talking about a highly educated speciality occupation work force here. Around the globe, so not just the US there's plenty of job oppertunities.
So again, I find the image you sketch here that Musk is holding these people "hostage" as "slaves" with their pasports locked away like some sort of Abudabi overlord till their visa expires an extremely contrived one. If that genuinly was his overal modus operandi as a CEO we would have heard stories of that pop up all over Tesla and Space X (much more risky enterprises) which doesn't seem to be the case.
Also: if what you're telling me is indeed true it certainly makes the idea of encouraging (mass) immigration to the US a rather double edged/dubious one from a liberal perspective at least..seen as how easy this can potentially be taken advantage off.

On point 1, the perception is that H1B visa workers tend to be underpaid compared to their domestic coworkers. This is especially true for the technology companies WITCH (ex. InfoSys, Wipro) (link). Twitter, Meta, and other reputable big tech companies are likely fairer, but their H1B employees are still subject to the US' strict employment and immigration laws. And yes, liberals get angry when we see companies taking advantage of their H1B visa workers. At my workplace there's a contractor who would be excellent as a full-time employee, but he cannot be brought in full-time because he's on an H1B visa. I recently interviewed with his company and found out that their employees are underpaid compared to our direct hires.
For Musk's H1B twitter employees, you can think of them as having an effective paycut if they used to work 40-50 hours and are now expected to work 60-80 hours. We don't know when these employees landed in the US, but chances are many of them have been here for years and already established their lives, so I would not expect them to pack up and leave even if they do have plenty of opportunities around the world (which they do).
Technically, nothing is stopping these employees from quitting. When an H1B visa worker quits voluntarily, they are no longer in the US legally (see here). It's very risky for them to quit without a job lined up (or with another employer having submitted an H1B visa application), and lining up a new job in the US will be difficult given that so many domestic engineers are currently looking for work.

good point, yeah the employee would need to reapply after the 6 years
Gonna be buying a car soon! The first one I will be getting on my own. Pretty nervous about getting a loan, but then again very much excited!

Petrol all the way. Looking at Alfa Romeo Guiliettas with a 1.4 petrol engine with 170 horses mostly. That car really appeals to me, it's gorgeous and sure does pack a punch. Practicality-wise, could be better but honestly almost never have a full car. Maybe once or twice a year when I travel, but I don't think I need a bigger car.
Unfortunately, my all-online bank has a stupid bug which doesn't let me continue with the loan application...idiots.
