John Dopping returns with his Definitions alias, this time alongside Anthony Yarranton to give us the stellar progressive trancer, Adrift. Adrift has an almost Anjunabeats feel, bringing back memories of when the Anjuna / Euphonic partnership was in full swing. Full on groove, a lush vocal and a fantastic complimentary pluck and chord sequence will warm anyone up nicely for a cracking trance journey.

Meh, its.fine but it lacks rhytmic variety and a strong musical identiy. Its too one-dimensional and has this predictible structure and the sounds they use is almost always textbook/safe modern synths or drum presets. Its almost always the same with modern stuff even when its not generic/steroid stuff. Its good, but its never great. Its nice but its never exciting.

Its not enough with just sounding ok. Its not enough to just sound a little more slick/nuanced than normal weekly steroid trance. Im tired of producers that only seem to focus on production/technical side. Im tired of producers that just make trance so they can shoehorn into a specific substyle like that somehow turns into something good/credible just by doing it. Like here this is progressive trance that only slightly reminds you of the good old days but its stiill devoid of any soul and its just a bit safer and a bit boring and repetitiv and lets cut it to 5.mins so theres no journey bur it will probably work in a set. Dont try to develope any musical ideas into something bigger. Just make it good enough . Ive heard it once ive heard it all.

Wheres the raw musical talent?? Its like everyone just want to be good enough. Most producers seem to focus on quantity and realsing alot ob different labels but not specialise or get really good with one style, instead its just this good enough /safe approach with every project. You can count the ones that do try to stick out or that have actual musical talent or a bigger musical vision on your right hand.

I wanna hear stuff of this calibre again..make it unique, make it great, have a musical vision for it. And then i will gladly pay for it. Double up.

I know you get a lot of stick in the forum for having views like this, but the truth is you're mostly and often right in what you observe. I like the current scene and take enjoyment from it, but we all know the standards dropped off a cliff and never returned in the same way. Whethe this is due to a mindset, skill gap or technological reason I don't know, but it's real and you're simply pointing it out. I don't see why not and to be honest I prefer realism vs. sugarcoating.

Q: Where is the talent?
A: I have none, can you lend me some?

All I've ever strived for is "Good enough." I regularly break egg yolks so they're hardened when fried, but it's still food right? Personally, I don't see the point in spending my time trying or using effort, I'm only in it for the dollar dollar bills $$$ that we all know are abundant for so-called "artists" like me.

I've been called out, I'm so sorry for all the mediocrity everyone, I'd say I'll try harder but that goes against my morals.

Each to their own, live and let etc. Silver lining, at least someone's listening! All banter aside, thanks everyone for your comments both favourable and less so & for keeping a trance community alive. I'm just being a cheeky chap.

Toty for the vocal chops alone. Perfect track.

It directly reminds me so much of this OST from Tekken revolution (free to play fighting game):
