When this man sends you his new tracks you get an instant rush of adrenaline, you know they're gonna be damn good. John Eriksson (aka YAMS) delivered these stunning slabs of Deep Trance and Progressive Breaks called 'Remnant' and 'Desolated'. No words or description needed here, this is absolutely phenomenal.

You have no idea how proud I am of this release. We've done stem mastering for both tracks, let's hope we get some nice support on this one

Both are rhythmically monotonous and musically uninteresting unfortunaly imo (this is just my opinion as always). You nailed the mastering but I find the structure of the tracks really predictible and bland muscially. I know exactly how they will build and what channels will be used. That breakbeat pattern with those really snappy reverby snares and the sidechained steroid bassline isnt good. Seems YAMS used this pattern in all his bb tracks. People here seems to still love it though.

What trance is missing in the grand scheme of things is good/interesting song-writing (and unique sound-design), both the mainstream and underground scenes are equally guilty of this. Both scenes are waaaay to much into genres/styles/production wanking. Has been for 10-15 years already. Thats why we never get any long-lasting worthy tracks.

I mean yes, sure, mostly. What do you want to discuss with that? Does supersaws define trance? A statement like this just prooves that song-writing and unique sound design isnt prioritized. That isnt always a winning formula but fuck it is most of the time.

What producers did better in the past (not always) was their ability to either A: write catchy and/or endearing/captivaitng/interesting melodies B: their ability to dodge the monotonous traditonal trance 4x4 beat and make the tracks less predictible. C: more unique sound design. Thats why I critique your work here, its too predictible in how it builds. Your placement where the elements come in is done in a most predictible way. Well-made trance from the past used more complex rhythms that built in a subtle way that made you forgot you actually listened to a repetitiv piece of music.

I do somewhat agree with daysleeper, about the tracks being formulaic in how they build and because of that it becomes more un-interesting and predictable. Desolated I did enjoy though and usually I am not into this kind of breaks style, production wise it sounds really nice.

Remnant is a bit of an unexpected calm and peaceful track, it's not the usual thing we get from YAMS. Desolated is by far the winner of the EP, I'm just a big sucker for this type of prog breaks; they're a bit edgy, and pack more energy than what you normally get in the prog breaks genre. Same reason why I was a HUGE fan of Beatman and Ludmilla, although technically I guess they qualify as psy-breaks.

Having said that, I think YAMS is one of those artists that you either really appreciate because of the unique sound, or you don't. Just like Activa. They remain within their sound design and they deliver excellent productions, but I can also understand the argument that there is little artist evolution over the years.
